WSIB launched the Mental Health Program of Care on April 27, 2026. The program replaces the former Community Mental Health Program and is designed to provide timely access to mental health assessment and different treatment options through contracted community providers.
Mental health assessment and treatment can now be delivered through the Mental Health Program of Care.
WSIB states that there is a transition period from the former program until September 1, 2026.
Care is delivered through contracted health care providers who follow WSIB program guidelines and reporting requirements.
WSIB describes the program as being for people who have a registered WSIB claim or recurrence and who experience certain work-related psychological reactions.
A worker may experience psychological symptoms after a work-related physical injury, particularly when pain, reduced function or a difficult recovery affects everyday life.
The program may also apply where there is a significant psychological response to a workplace incident or cumulative workplace incidents.
WSIB identifies traumatic mental stress as one of the examples that may fall within the program when claim requirements are met.
WSIB also identifies chronic mental stress and first responder post-traumatic stress disorder among examples of claims that may be considered.
WSIB identifies two treatment service types in the Mental Health Program of Care. A person may participate in either one or both, depending on their approved needs.
Psychotherapy can take place in a clinic or office and may address psychological symptoms, coping, adjustment and recovery goals according to the approved plan of care.
Functional recovery may take place in the community and/or workplace and focuses on supporting participation in daily and work-related activities where appropriate.
WSIB lists several regulated provider types that can participate in the Mental Health Program of Care, depending on the service required.
May provide psychotherapy services within the program where contracted and approved.
May deliver appropriate mental health services within the program based on role and authorization.
May provide assessment and treatment services within the program.
May support functional recovery and participation in everyday or work activities.
May participate as contracted providers within the program where appropriate.
WSIB maintains an official directory of contracted Mental Health Program of Care providers.
WSIB states that people must receive approval before participating in the Mental Health Program of Care. A contracted clinic does not decide whether a worker’s claim is eligible for the program.
A registered claim or recurrence is part of the program criteria described by WSIB.
